February is Black History month and there are many ways it can be celebrated at home and in the classroom. I have found from my experiences as a teacher that most kids enjoy reading and for some reason, kids really love bookmarks.
A really easy activity I have found for kids to celebrate Black History month, whether it is at home or at school is offering free Martin Luther King Jr. printables and the bookmarks are always one of the most popular in the classroom. There are lots of many free printable available on the internet focusing on Black History month and Martin Luther King Jr. but the kids especially like coloring the Martin Luther King printables.

MLK (as he is often referred to) was shot by an assassin's bullet on April 4, 1968. Here are free printable lesson plans to help you explore this legendary hero. ABC Teach this website has been a favorite of mine for some time. The page I've linked to contains 16 free printable lessons focused on world peace and unity. There are crafts, writing prompts, posters, games, coloring pages, word search, worksheets, reading activities, acrostic forms, poetry frames and much more. After all, wasn't peace, unity and brotherhood what Dr. King was all about?
ABC Teach MLK this links you to the ABC Teach page dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. It has writing prompts, worksheets, lessons, games and activities about Dr. King and his speeches, including "I have a Dream".
Let me conclude with a link and a quote from that famous speech made by Dr. King, made on August 28, 963 at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. I Have a Dream:
"It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt...I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" (excerpt).

Each year, the United States devotes a holiday to Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. The holiday is observed the third Monday of January, in honor of the birthday of Dr. King. Kids may simply view this day as a vacation from school. Using some simple craft ideas, kids can learn to understand the significance of Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
1. Make a handprint wreath

Using construction paper in varying colors, have students trace their hand-prints. Cut the hand-prints out and assemble them with glue into a colorful wreath.
2. I Have a Dream Poster

Instruct students to write about a dream that they have for the world. Students that are too young to write can draw a picture of their dreams for peace on earth. These would make a great display for Martin Luther King, Jr. day, as well as spring conferences with parents.
3. Write an I Have a Dream Speech

Encourage students to envision a more peaceful world. What does that look like, in their view? Instruct them to write a speech to deliver to the class that incorporates their ideas and encourages a more peaceful world for the future. Read the speeches aloud or display them in the classroom. As an added activity, award a Nobel Peace Prize to the student with the best ideas.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr had a dream which inspired the world! His eloquent words offered encouragement that people of all colors, races, cultures, and religions could live together in peace. The holiday that commemorates his legacy is celebrated each January and one of the best ways for children to learn and share in the celebration is through making crafts. Here are some fun crafts and educational activities to help you get the most out of this special holiday.
"I Have A Dream" Mobile

Since Dr. King had a dream, so can you. Encourage kids to create a colorful craft that symbolizes what they think is needed to make the world a better place. Once done, have them create a mobile that displays their ideas.
For this craft, all you will need are markers, pens, crayons, string/yarn, glue/glue sticks, cardstock/construction paper, and sticks or a hanger. For the center of your mobile, create a cloud using the cardstock or construction paper. From that same paper, create smaller clouds. On the smaller clouds, have your child or students write out their ideas for making the world better. Attach the smaller clouds to the larger cloud. Hang their clouds from a hanger or crossed sticks. Use glue, pens and markers to decorate the clouds in whatever way they want. Adding rainbows or even glitter to their clouds will add to the beauty of their creative mobiles.
Peace Medal

In lessons about Dr. King, children learn that he won the Nobel Peace Prize at age 35. Have your students or children make their own Peace medals that look similar to the one awarded to Dr. King. There are several ways a Peace Medal can be made. For very small children, stick with ribbons and paper. For more mature children, you can use clay and ribbons. For small kids, you simply have them cut a circle and write in the word peace. Once the circle is decorated, attach the ribbon and your young ones can wear their Peace Medals. For your older children, have them mold their fast drying or oven bake clay into various shapes. Once made, dry the medallion centers. After the clay has dried, have your students or children decorate their medals. Add the ribbon and have your students show off their wonderful work.

Dr. King's legacy can be taught in many ways. Students can use templates and drawings to create even more memorable crafts. Students can find pictures of Dr. King on the web or through books. Artsy students can even draw pictures. With these pictures, you can decorate posters or paper plates with Dr. King's image.
Other crafts can include unity wreaths, coloring pages, and birthday hats with Dr. King's image on them. Most of these activities do not require expensive supplies and can be made with things around the home or classroom.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life is worthy of celebration. As a Man of Peace, he stood as an example that change does not require guns or violence. As an American, he wanted all Americans to live in harmony. The federal holiday celebrating his birthday is a time for people to reminder that all men, women and children are created equal. Live the dream.

Even though I am Caucasian, I do understand the significance of what Dr. Martin Luther King'sdreams and passions are about. I respect this man as a human being and as an activist in his time. I feel his time with us on Earth was too short. Even for me, he is an inspiration.
While searching for the coloring pages for this Martin Luther King Day article and coloring pages, some of the photos and coloring pages I found led me to find out more about him than I knew before.
One of the photos I saw of him made me wonder what he was thinking at the time it was taken. Other photo's gave me a chill, such as the one taken during his I Have a Dream speech.

I feel anyone who has compassion for people should learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr. He can inspire us all to become a better person. Feeling inspired by those who have overcome diversities in their lives can help us find out who we are.
Taking a stand to change the way we look and think about people from a different race, culture, and those with handicaps, can help us become at peace with ourselves and others. This isn't what Dr. King was aiming for in his I Have a Dream speech, but by freeing ourselves from the boundaries of segregation of all kinds is what is going to have to change. With the boundaries of segregation of blacks, whites, Indians, Muslims, Hispanics, and all other races, no one race will ever be free of the chains our forefathers have given us.
